Homemade Trail Treats for Your Trail Dog

It’s no secret, our furry companions love treats and their humans love spoiling them equally as much. Like most people, I usually purchase my dog treats at the store, but there’s nothing more satisfying and enjoyable then spending a fall evening at home making your dog some treats while they stare intently at you because it smells so delicious. Not only is it fun to make homemade treats, but it’s important to know what’s going into your dog’s stomach and there’s no better way then regulating it yourself!

These treats are packed full of fiber, vitamin E, vitamin c, antioxidants and more! Perfect for giving your dog a little extra energy on the trail. They’re even Jazz.Paws approved!

Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups oat flour (made from steel cut oats in coffee grinder)
  • 2/3 cup dried blueberries
  • 1/2 cup dried apples (chopped into small pieces)
  • 1/2 cup dried bananas (chopped into small pieces)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup rice milk
  • 1 egg

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°
  2. Make oat flour by grinding 1.5 cups of steel oats in coffee grinder
  3. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix together by hand to ensure everything is mixed. Be sure to wash your hands well after you’re done touching the mix!
  4. Form ball with mix and put on a flat cutting board, use parchment paper or flour to eliminate sticking. Flatten mix with rolling pin or hands (sometimes you have to improvise J). Thickness should be about ¼ inches thick.
  5. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the flattened mix and move cut outs to an ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Roll any extra mixture into small balls to use as training treats (put these on a different baking pan so you can cook them for less time).
  7. Place cut outs and rolled balls into oven, on separate pans.
  8. Bake the smaller balled treats for 9 minutes, or until golden brown on bottom.
  9. Bake larger treats for 18 minutes, or until golden brown on bottom.
  10. Remove from oven and let cool before taking off of baking sheet. Place in a sealed, air-tight container until you’re ready to hit the trail with your pup!
  11. Hit the trail with your dog and smile as they wag their tails at these tasty treats!
